About Weighing Machine:

Ever wondered why are we talking about weighing machines or weighing scales? Yes, this is one such topic that needs no introduction as we are seeing the weight machines or weighing scales use at very different levels and at very different places of our life. Weight machines or weighing scales become part of our routine life, being it be a grocery store, home, hospitals, gym and every where the need of weighing machine is the need of the hour.

What is weighing machine or weight scales?

Weighting machine is a device which measure weight of a particular object. In simple terms weighing machine is a device to measure weight or mass. Depending on the uses and needs, there are different types of weighing machines present in the industry. Traditional scales consist of two pans or bowls suspended at distances which are equal from fulcrum. One plate will hold the weight of specific values and in the other place the object for which the weight has to be measured is placed. The weights are confirmed only when the equilibrium among the weight and object placed to weigh is achieved.

How weighing machines came into existence?

When people realized the importance of weight and weighing an object for their use, weighing machines need has been determined. When we look out at the history and findings, the very first existence of the weighing machines was found to in the 2400 – 1800 B.C. These existences are from the Indus valley civilization.  Historians found out that the weighing objects as uniformed polished stones were discovered which termed to be used as weighing stones in balancing scales.

It all started with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz in the year 1646-1716. He is credited with co-inventing the mathematical discipline of calculus at the side of Newton, is likewise believed to possess conceived the primary weighing devices. His construction become almost like the astrological sign Libra is generally represented: A vertical publish with a high bar constant to the top of it by way of a movable joint. From the ends of this high bar had been suspended two plates of sufficient relative mass to preserve the meeting in balance.

The genius of Leibniz’ device, called a middle balance, is that it’s going to decide relative a lot of labeled items through a sequence of additives and subtractions of pebbles or the likes of. From this scheme, it had been inevitable that positions would be marked and assigned numerical values, and a whole new system of keeping particular song of quantities become put live. These traditional methods existed and helped the then people in measuring weights.

In the mid-1750s, the first pendulum scales appeared, and these became greater elaborate over time as engineering tendencies allowed for extra precision in manufacturing. Pendulum scales are nevertheless used today in many forms, and lots of are fitted with electronics that leave, say, the conversion of a given weight to a given price.

What is the traditional Weighing machine look like?

Traditional weighing scale or weighing machine consists of two plates hanged on to a chain or a rope with a balancing indicator pin at the middle. Weights will be placed such that one side will have a weighing object of predefined weight and the other plate will have weighing object for which the weight is to be measured.

Evolution of weigh machines or weighing scales over the years:

When we look at the weighing machines or scales over the years, one can analyze the need it was at that specific times. When we talk about the weighing scales in the ancient times, it would be a simple rod for which two vessels will be tied and balanced as per the weights. Later on, there were simplified instruments that came into existence.

Weighing machines undergone tremendous changes which made the access ease with the inventions over the years. This has been a instrumental when we talk more about it, knowing the changes it has undergone

Be it an analytic weighing scales which measure weights as per the capacity it has defined. Counting scales then made into existence which wholly used only for counting the numbers on the weighing plates. Crane scales came into existence when construction and industry evolution’s took place. Micro balance scales and Jewelry scales came into existence to measure micro grams. Postal scale for weighing letters and vehicle scales for weighing vehicles, large trucks.

Type of Weighing machines:

There are different types of weighing scales in use now a days depending on the requirements and type of use:

  • Analytical weighing machine
  • Counting scale machine
  • Micro balance machines
  • Postal scales
  • Vehicle scales
  • Industry high weighing Crane scales
  • Digital scales
  • Analytical weighing machine: Analytical weighing machine or scale works on simple weighting phenomenon. It has two plates tied to a rod and marker will point towards or opposite to the plates depending on the weight. Usually these analytical weighing scales can be seen to weigh things, and in labs. Usually measurements take places by closing the box and placing the weighs inside the box on the plates, this is to eliminate any gravitational or atmospheric disturbances on the weight.

If you really wonder how these machines work, then you have to visit educational institutions or scientific laboratories where these devices exist still. One can find unique concept behind this in weighing.

How Analytical weighing machine works: Analytical weighing machine has two pans attached to a rod which is placed in a closure. Closure ensures that the air currents doesn’t disturb the weights. The weights are then placed on one side and the weighing objects on the other, the measuring arrow then balances according to the weight adjusted by changing the weights at intervals until weighting object is measured.

Counting scale machine: Counting scale machines are used to weigh multiple number of objects with uniform weight, to display total piece count. This is generally used to weight or count number of weighing objects depending on the single known weight. These machines have played major role in making the enormous work with ease and hence the machines are now used in many industrial places. Its use and importance of weighing is high still.

How counting scale machine works: Counting scale machines work by taking the input value provided by key input or using a sample weight and then equally calculating the weight among placed pieces then dividing the total weight by the weight of sample or key in input values.

  • Micro balance machines: Micro balance machines are used to weigh objects with minute weights example: Jewellery, diamonds, precious stones etc. Microgram is one billionth of a kilogram and hence these machines can measure weights from 1 microgram. Micro balance machines can also be used by pharmacists, chemists and in medical industry.

With the advancement of the science and technology. Digital machines that weigh micro weights came into existence, which we can see as Gram scales, pocket scales etc.

How digital Micro balance scales work: Digital micro balance scales work in the same manner where strain gauge which experiences weight converts the weight to voltages and the sensor in the machine converts it to numeric values that can be displayed on to the screen.

  • Postal scales: Postal scales are advanced machines which is used in postal departments to measure weights. With the preset values set on the device, the scale can tell exact prices for the object weight placed on the device. This device is more useful in predicting price of shipping depending on the weight of object.

These machines are more prominently used in the government agencies, institutions and postal departments, Railways and many more places.

How Postal scales work: Postal scales work on the technology where the weight is converted and displayed as numbers. The internal part of strain gauge will convert the weight into voltage and then the sensor measures and calculates it to numeric values.

  • Vehicle scales: The weighing machines used to weight large trucks, buses, and loads in the trucks and generally used in the manufacturing and automobiles industries. These weighing scales can be seeing in highways which will weigh the heavily loaded trucks.

In some countries at some highways these scales will be specifically installed to avoid any overweight of the trucks that violates permitted weight limit to carry on a specific route.

How Vehicle scales work: These cells mainly work on technology called Load-cell system. Each cell in Load-cell systems are built with durable material such as steel or concrete and in some cases a combination of both. Strain gauges are attached to it as integrated structure, when weight is subjected to it, these strain gauge transmits the weight into voltages and the sensor will then measure and calculate the weight accordingly.

Industry high weighing Crane scales: These machines specifically design to weight heavy to very heavy weights. These scales are usually a crane type machines which can lift any heavy weight objects to measure its weight. These are generally seen in the manufacturing, automobile and construction industries. Usually it can measure anything more and above 5000 pounds.

How Crane scales work: Crane scales measures weight by taking on weights to a hanging hook and the weight it takes can be measure by converting the pressure to voltages and in turn these voltages to a number of values displayed on the screen.

Digital scales: Digital scales are advanced then the analytical scales. Digital scales will measure weight same as the other scales but the measurement reading can be shown instantly on the screen with LED or LCD displays. More used scales are gram scales, baby scales etc.

How Digital Scales work: Digital scales also build on same concept of traditional scales, but the technological advances are such that it uses a strain gauge. This strain gauge bends and generates a proportional voltage to the weight it had experienced and this voltage is then converted to numeric values and displayed on the screen.
